What is NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies)?
During a nerve conduction study, small surface electrodes are placed on the skin over a nerve and the muscle it supplies. Brief, mild electrical pulses are applied and the response is recorded, showing how quickly and how strongly signals travel along the nerve. Nothing is passed into the body, and most people describe the pulses as a short tingling or tapping sensation.
What is EMG (Electromyography)?
Electromyography records the electrical activity a muscle produces. A very fine needle electrode is placed into the muscle and the activity is recorded while the muscle is relaxed, then while it is gently tightened. The recording helps the clinician assess how the muscle and the nerve supplying it are working. EMG and NCS are often carried out in the same appointment.
What is EEG (Electroencephalography)?
An EEG records the brain’s electrical activity. Small electrodes are attached to the scalp with a gel or paste, and activity is recorded while you rest quietly. You may be asked to breathe deeply, to look at a flashing light, or to open and close your eyes at certain points. The electrodes only listen — nothing is passed into the body, and the test is painless.
What is RNS (Repetitive Nerve Stimulation)?
In repetitive nerve stimulation, a nerve is stimulated several times in a short series while the response of the muscle it supplies is recorded. Comparing those responses shows how consistently the signal is passing from the nerve to the muscle. Like a nerve conduction study, it uses surface electrodes and brief, mild electrical pulses.
